In 1931, Ferdinand Porsche and Anton Piëch started a company in Stuttgart, Germany to develop motor vehicles. The German government contracted Porsche to design the “Volkswagen,” a car that the average person could afford, the people’s car.
Many of the parts used in the Volkswagen were integrated into the Porsche 64 but World War II interrupted its development. During the war Porsche designed the Volkswagen based Kübelwagen and various other military vehicles. After the war Porsche was imprisoned for 20-months. During that period his son Ferry started producing a prototype car in Gmund, Austria that could be shown to car dealers. Once dealer interest was established production of the 356 began.
In 1964, the Model 911 was introduced and in 1969, the 914 which made use of a Volkswagen engine and the 914-6 that had a Porsche engine. In 1976, several Audi components and Audi’s factory were utilized to produce the Model 924. The 944 was also built at the same Neckarsulm plant. In 1978, Porsche began production of the 928 which was powered by a front-mounted, liquid-cooled V-8 engine. In 1993, the mid-engine Boxster appeared.
In 2012, Volkswagen AG took over Porsche AG which is a subsidiary of Porsche SE which in turn is the controlling shareholder of Volkswagen AG.
