MASERATI

Five Maserati brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto founded the company in Bologna, Italy in 1914 to build racing cars.

In 1937, the company was sold to the Orsi family who, in 1940, relocated the business to Modena. Bindo, Ernesto and Ettore remained as engineers. A Maserati 8CTF driven by Wilbur Shaw won the Indianapolis 500 in both 1939 and 1940. In the later 40s the brothers left Maserati  and formed O.S.C.A.

Juan-Manuel Fangio took a number of Grand-Prix victories for Maserati and the world championship in 1957.

By the late 50s the company became more involved in the production of road cars. In 1968, Maserati was acquired by Citroën which went bankrupt in 1974 passing ownership to PSA Peugeot Citroën then to De Tomaso.  Fiat bought Maserati in 1993 and then sold half interest to Ferrari, which is part of the Fiat Group, in 1997. Ferrari took full ownership in 1999 and then in 2005 Maserati was merged with Alfa Romeo.
