CHRYSLER

Walter P. Chrysler had started as a railroad machinist who worked himself into a manager’s position with the American Locomotive Company. In 1911 he was offered the position of works manager at the Buick Motor Company making $6,000 a year. He eventually became president and when he left in 1919 he was among the richest men in America.

Chrysler was then hired to run Willys-Overland but difficulties with John Willys motivated him to leave in 1921. Chrysler acquired the Maxwell Motor Company and then formed a new company, Chrysler Corporation in 1925.

Fred Zeder, Owen Skelton and Carl Breer  of Zeder-Skelton-Breer Engineering Co. were hired to design the Chrysler Model B which went on sale in 1924. These three men gave Chrysler a reputation for good engineering.

In 1928 Chrysler formed Plymouth Motor and DeSoto Motor Corporations and purchased Dodge Brothers.
