CORVETTE

Introduced in 1953, the first Corvette made use of the same suspension, chassis and engine used by the 1952 Chevrolet.  It had a white fiberglass convertible body. Only 300 units were produced that year. In 1955, the 265 V-8 was offered as an option. In 1956, there was a beautiful new body and in 1957 a fuel injected 283 engine that produced 283 horsepower.   

1963 saw the name Sting Ray and the addition of a coupe with a distinctive but controversial split rear window. Although highly sought after today, the split window was a point of contention between engineering and design. In 1964, engineering won out and the split window was gone.

The third generation Mako Shark Corvette body style came out in 1968. In 1969, the Sting Ray name returned as Stingray.

With the 1984 model year came the fourth generation Corvette. There was a jump in price but the car was becoming more of a true sports car.

The fifth generation began in 1997 with improvements in almost every category.

The 2005 sixth generation featured exposed headlamps and 400 horsepower which went to 505 with the Z06. The 2007 ZR1 was pumping out 638 horsepower and claimed a top speed of 205 mph. World class performance but Corvette buyers were aging.

A more refined seventh generation Corvette was introduced in 2014 that Chevrolet hopes will appeal to both traditional and younger buyers.
