In 1909, Italian Ettore Bugatti founded his automobile company in Molsheim an Alsace city in Germany that reverted to France after the First World War. Bugatti cars were known for their engineering and style and enjoyed great success in racing but when the end came in 1952 the company had produced fewer than 8,000 cars.
Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli acquired the Bugatti name in 1987, and established Bugatti Automobili SpA. The company produced the Bugatti EB110 GT and in 1993 purchased Lotus Cars. Operations ended in 1995.
In 1998 Volkswagen AG bought the Bugatti name and formed Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.
