AMERICAN AUSTIN – BANTAM

Established in Butler, Pennsylvania in 1929 as the American Austin Car Company to build the English Austin 7 which they sold as the American Austin.  The hoped for sales never developed and the company went bankrupt after producing approximately 20,000 vehicles.

Roy Evans bought the company in 1935 and renamed it “American Bantam.” With only around 6,000 produced by 1941 an effort was made to save the company with the design of the U.S. Army Reconnaissance Car that became the vehicle commonly called a “Jeep.” Unfortunately for Bantam the Government decided Bantam lacked the production capacity and awarded almost all the orders to Willys and Ford.
