JAGUAR

William Lyons and William Walmsley began the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922 to produce motorcycle sidecars.  The company was located in Blackpool but with the success that came from producing Swallow bodies for the Austin automobile the name went from Swallow Sidecar to SS Cars Ltd. And a move was made to larger facilities on Holbrook Lane in Coventry. By 1951, again growth required expansion, this time to Browns Lane.

In 1935, the company began producing a car they called the SS Jaguar which included the beautiful SS 100 sporting model. After WWII and the image of the Nazi SS the company name was changed to simply Jaguar.

The XK 120 was introduced in 1949 which led to the XK 140 and XK 150 and in 1961, the XK-E Type. In addition to these great sport cars Jaguar produced various sporty saloons such as the Mk II and XJ6. After having acquired The Daimler Company in 1960 their high end saloons carried the name of that marque.

In 1966, Jaguar was sold to British Motor Corporation which became British Motor Holdings and then joined Leyland Motor Corporation to form British Leyland. By the mid-1980s Jaguar was again a private company.  In the 1990s Jaguar was purchased by the Ford Motor Company which proved to be an unprofitable move for Ford so the brand was sold to Tata Motors of India in 2008.
