FIAT

Fiat, Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, was established in 1899 and in 1900, the Fiat Factory in Carso Dante built 24 cars. Fiat soon distinguished itself on the race track and by 1908 had expanded to the point of opening a plant in the United States to build luxury cars. When the U.S. entered WWI the American Fiat factory was overwhelmed with new regulations and closed.

After the First World War ended the company expanded into the building of tractors but when the Fiat plants were taken over by the communist in 1921 business floundered until the occupation ended.  With growth resumed new models including the Topolino were introduced.  Then a second Word War began and production had to be shifted to military use.

Many of Fiat’s facilities were destroyed during WWII requiring that a program of reconstruction be undertaken before production could resume. New cars such as the 500 were introduced and by the late 1950s the company was again growing both its auto and farm equipment business.

Fiat acquired several well-known Italian brands that would form Fiat S.p.A. Brands such as  Lancia, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Maserati were now part of the Fiat family. In January of 2014, Fiat S.p.A. and Chrysler Group LLC were merged to form Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.
