Headquartered in Maranello, Italy Ferrari produced its first car, the 125 S, in 1947. The founder Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988) had been a driver for Alfa Romeo in the 1920s before founding Scuderia Ferrari in Modena to provide assistance to other drivers in the fielding of their cars. In 1939 he established Auto Avio Costruzioni which produced two cars for the 1940 Mille Miglia before operations were stopped due to the Second World War.
The prancing horse logo came from Italian WW I pilot Francesco Baracca who used it on his airplane. Ferrari was given permission to adopt the Baracca’s horse which was set against a field of yellow to honor the city of Modena along with the colors green-white-red from the Italian flag.
After negotiations with Ford failed, Fiat took a 50% stake in Ferrari in 1969 which was increased to 90% in 1988.
