The Duryea brothers were pioneers in the American’s auto industry but when they could no longer get along with each other brother Frank designed a new car and went into partnership with the J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company to produce it. The car would be manufactured in a factory in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts that had been used by Overman to produce bicycles and steam cars.
They sold their first car in 1901 for $1,200. It was a runabout with a 5 horsepower engine. By 1904, for $1,300 you could purchase the Model L which had the astonishing power of 6 horses. The Model D produced in 1915 had an 80 horsepower six-cylinder engine. A lot more horses but not enough hay so Frank stopped production and sold the plant.
In 1919, a group of former employers from the old Stevens-Duryea company purchased the name and put the car back into production as the Model E. Although the price was now close to $10,000 they managed to stay in business until 1927.
