Founded by former race car driver Carroll Shelby in 1962 Shelby American began operations in Venice, California to build the Cobra sports car. The Cobra is a British AC automobile fitted with an American 260 Ford V-8 engine and Borg-Warner four-speed transmission. The 260 will be replaced with the 289.
In September of 1964 the Mustang GT-350 is introduced and then in January, 1965 the 427 Cobra. Historically these are the glory years, the FIA roadster, Daytona Coupe, Mustangs in SCCA and the Ford GT-40 program.
In February 1970 Ford and Shelby bring their racing agreement to an end.
In 2005, Ford introduced the Shelby GT500 Mustang.
